Custom Home Builders, Hartness

An English Vernacular Legacy, Reimagined for Hartness

Few architectural traditions carry as much soul as English Vernacular. Born from the English Arts and Crafts movement — a reaction against the grandiose and often hollow excess of the Industrial Revolution — it champions something simpler and more enduring: honest craftsmanship, handmade character, and homes that feel timeless from the moment they’re built. It’s the inspiration behind this custom home in Hartness.

At Sexton Griffith, we don’t just replicate a style. We understand its bones: the steeply pitched rooflines, the asymmetrical charm, the sense that every detail was placed with intention rather than mass-produced. This is architecture built to last — in proportion, in craftsmanship, and in character.

Details That Define the Style

The Roofline
A steeply pitched, side-gabled roof with a decorative front-facing gable is the hallmark of the style. Compositions are almost always asymmetrical — sometimes with mirrored, sweeping gables — giving each home its own distinct silhouette rather than a repeated formula.

Windows
Vertically proportioned casement windows with small square or diamond panes lend an old-world elegance, while six-over-six double-hung windows offer a more classic, understated alternative.

Entryways & Doors
Entries range from simple stone or brick detailing to more ornate hoods and bracketed stoop coverings. Doors take their cue from French, plank, or richly paneled Jacobean designs — each adding presence without excess.

Porches
Heavy timbered and often pegged together by hand, porches feature chamfered posts and turned detailing. Other variations lean toward loggia-style arches in stone or brick, echoing Roman and pointed medieval forms.

Materials & Masonry
Siding varies from rough-sawn horizontal boards to bark-edge siding and wood shingles, with half-timbering as a signature accent. Masonry work draws on wood-mould brick, coursed or random stone, and roughcast stucco — materials chosen for texture and authenticity, not uniformity.

A Grounded Palette
Colors range from warm neutrals to deep Jacobean browns, with dark — often black — window sashes. Roofs are finished in wood or slate shingle, completing a look that feels both storied and substantial.
